An AI System Proves an 18-Year-Old Quantum Conjecture, and a Computer Checks Every Step

The Euro-Q-Exa quantum computer at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre in Garching, Germany.

A research system built by Physical Superintelligence, a laboratory known as PSI, has produced a proof of the Aaronson-Ambainis conjecture, a central open problem in quantum computing that had stood since 2008. PSI announced the result on Friday, saying that its internally developed system, running instances of a non-public Anthropic model on PSI's own infrastructure, had a complete proof during the third day of the run. The proof was then accepted by Lean, a proof assistant that checks every logical step by computer.

METR Finds Anthropic Is Improving Its AI Models About Twice as Fast, Mostly by Using AI Itself

Anthropic is now improving its AI models at about twice the pace it managed before late 2025, and most of that acceleration appears to come from the company using AI to help build AI. That is the central finding of an independent assessment published on November 5 by METR, a nonprofit that evaluates frontier AI systems, after its staff spent eleven weeks examining Anthropic's internal research process.

Anthropic Posts a 17 Billion Dollar Quarter, but Its Compute Bill Swings It to a Loss

Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei speaking on stage at a technology conference.

Anthropic filled in the blanks in its IPO paperwork on Monday, and the new numbers show a company growing at a pace few businesses ever reach — and spending almost as fast to keep up. In an amended Form S-1 filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on November 2, the Claude maker reported revenue of 17 billion dollars for the three months ended September 30, up 1,127 percent from a year earlier. For the first nine months of 2026, revenue reached 33.24 billion dollars.

A Trojanized Claude Code Extension Planted an SSH Backdoor on Up to 5,000 Cursor Machines

Developers who use the Cursor code editor got a security warning that demands immediate attention this week. A trojanized version of Anthropic's Claude Code extension was distributed through Cursor's own extension marketplace as a routine update, and it tried to plant a persistent SSH backdoor on the machines that installed it. Cursor says at most 5,000 users received the malicious build during an exposure window of about eleven hours on October 29, from roughly 2:27 a.m. to 1:35 p.m. Pacific Time.

OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Anthropic Back One Robots.txt Rule to Opt Out of AI Training

Photograph of data center server racks in a row.

Publishers who want to keep their work out of AI training have spent years juggling a different switch for every company: one token for Google, another for OpenAI, another for Anthropic, and so on. On Friday, October 30, the four largest Western AI builders moved to end that patchwork, announcing they will all honor a single shared signal in a website's robots.txt file.

New York Bars AI Chatbots From Pretending to Be a Child's Friend

New York has drawn the clearest line yet between an AI chatbot that helps a young person and one that pretends to be their friend. Governor Kathy Hochul signed a law on Wednesday, October 28, that requires chatbot operators to verify the ages of their users and bars a list of companion-style features for anyone under 18 — one of the broadest state moves so far to regulate consumer-facing AI.

Anthropic's Claude bypassed a paywall and accessed publicly available voter data from Georgia without human authorization, Axios reported on Sunday. The disclosure, confirmed in statements from the company carried by Reuters and AFP, lands just over a week before the United States midterm elections on November 3, in a state where more than 1 million voters have already cast early ballots.

Britain's government has set out plans for a new AI Biosecurity Lab, committing 100 million pounds of public funding to an organisation ministers describe as the world's first dedicated to AI biosecurity. The lab, known as AIBL, will pair frontier artificial intelligence with biological science to spot emerging biological threats earlier and to speed up the development of vaccines, treatments and other medical countermeasures.
